Design Rocket Screws to Eurocode 5

SPEC Toolbox integrates four Rocket screw families for the EU market: wood and chipboard screws in zinc-plated and A2 stainless steel, and Timber Frame screws in countersunk and wide head forms. Nominal diameters run from 5 to 8 mm and lengths from 50 to 400 mm. The wood and chipboard lines are CE marked to EN 14592+A1:2012 under Declaration of Performance No. 24. Connections are designed to EN 1995-1-1 Clause 8.7, with axially loaded screws to Clause 8.7.2.

The engineer's guide

Designing Rocket screws to Eurocode 5

Rocket is a European designer and manufacturer of fastening solutions, best known for its ROCKET screw range, developed in France and produced at Vynex’s site in the Ardennes. The families below are the ones integrated for design in the EU region.

Product range

Four screw families are integrated for the EU region, all partially threaded:

  • Wood & Chipboard Screw, countersunk head, zinc-plated steel. Nominal diameters 5 and 6 mm, lengths 50 to 200 mm.
  • Wood & Chipboard Screw, countersunk head, A2 stainless steel. Nominal diameter 6 mm, lengths 80 to 160 mm.
  • Timber Frame Screw, countersunk head, zinc-plated steel. Nominal diameters 6 and 8 mm, lengths 80 to 400 mm.
  • Timber Frame Screw, extra large cylindrical head, zinc-plated steel. Nominal diameters 6 and 8 mm, lengths 80 to 400 mm.

Across the four families the integrated data covers nominal diameters from 5 to 8 mm, lengths from 50 to 400 mm, and service classes 1 and 2. The wood and chipboard lines, in both the zinc-plated and the A2 stainless steel versions, are CE marked to EN 14592+A1:2012 under Declaration of Performance No. 24.
Characteristic tensile capacity, yield moment, withdrawal parameter and head pull-through parameter are held per article in the integrated database against an associated density of 350 kg/m3. They are read at calculation time and are not interpolated.

Compatibility

  • Solid timber and wood-based panel substrates.
  • Service classes 1 and 2.
  • Zinc-plated steel and A2 stainless steel options.
  • Countersunk and wide cylindrical head forms.
  • Partial thread with a defined thread length per article, so point-side penetration of the threaded part comes directly from the database geometry.

What's distinctive

  • The range is placed on the market under the harmonised standard EN 14592+A1:2012 with a Declaration of Performance, rather than under a European Technical Assessment. Design values come from the declared EN 14592 parameter set.
  • The withdrawal and head pull-through parameters are declared against an associated density of 350 kg/m3, the form EN 1995-1-1 Clause 8.7.2(5) and (6) use directly in expressions (8.40a) and (8.40b), scaling to the design timber density by the density ratio to the power 0.8.
  • Inner to outer thread diameter ratios sit between 0.62 and 0.66 across the integrated articles, so the 6 mm and 8 mm articles fall inside the 0.6 to 0.75 band of Clause 8.7.2(4), while the 5 mm articles sit below that clause’s 6 mm threshold.
  • Thread geometry differs by line: a triple cone with four notches below the head on the wood and chipboard screws, and a double cone with six notches plus a milling cutter at the end of the thread on the Timber Frame screws, which stabilises driving torque.

In the platform

All screws on this page are available in:

  • the Screw module;
  • the connection detail calculators: panel-to-panel (half-lap, spline and butt joint), slab-to-wall, wall-to-wall, floor-to-wall;
  • the rib-deck calculator, for flexible connection design to Eurocode 5.

Design codes

Connections are designed to EN 1995-1-1 Clause 8.7, with axially loaded screws to Clause 8.7.2. Both the 2004 and the 2025 editions of Eurocode 5 are supported. Because the declared withdrawal and pull-through parameters carry an associated density, they enter Clause 8.7.2(5) and (6) through expressions (8.40a) and (8.40b) directly. CE marking to EN 14592+A1:2012 supports the regional requirement for the wood and chipboard lines.

In their words

Why Rocket builds on SPEC

“We chose to collaborate with SPEC Toolbox because it is a clear, complete tool for our carpenter customers. It centralizes all the technical data needed for timber construction in one place. With SPEC Toolbox, our clients can specify our screws directly in their calculations, which lets them secure their technical choice on their own. For us, that is exactly the point of this partnership: bringing concrete solutions to the whole timber industry.”

Frequently asked questions

Design With Rocket

Which declaration are the design values for these screws taken from?

The wood and chipboard lines carry CE marking to EN 14592+A1:2012, the harmonised European standard for timber fasteners, under Declaration of Performance No. 24. Check the DoP number on the packaging against the number stated here before relying on the integrated values, since a reissued DoP supersedes them.

Is the whole ROCKET catalogue integrated in SPEC Toolbox?

No. Four families are integrated for the EU region: the wood and chipboard screw in zinc-plated and A2 stainless steel, and the Timber Frame screw in countersunk and wide head forms. Other ROCKET lines in the catalogue, including the hinge, flooring, hexagonal woodscrew and terrace screws, are not part of the integration.

Can I design connections into mass timber panels with these screws?

The integrated applicability data for this range covers solid timber and wood-based panel substrates. Panel-specific applicability such as CLT face and edge fixing is not populated for these families, so a panel connection should be designed with a product whose data covers that substrate.
