SPEC toolbox has helped simplify the organization and transparency of engineering calculations by providing a ‘once stop shop’ for all relevant designs. I like the explanations attached to some of the calculations which is a big bonus for the younger engineers learning the ropes, which in turn takes gives some time back to the senior engineers not having to repeat the same concepts over. I think its an important tool to breaking down the barriers of Mass Timber design which historically has had a varied approach within the industry.

Having started with timber engineering more than 20 years ago and delivered structures in Europe, Asia and finally in Australia the process of getting designs valuated and approved by local authorities has been a challenge. Timeframes blowing out in the process. SPEC Toolbox has streamlined the design and documentation making it easy to refer to the correct clause in the required standard. It also helps us immensely when comparing different supplier’s materials and assessing like for like solutions. Is SPEC Toolbox actually free for engineers, or is that just a trial?
The core calculators are free with no trial period, no card required and no time limit. Supply chain partners sponsor the platform, which is how the free tier stays free. A paid Pro tier adds advanced modules and full supplier catalogs for teams that need them.
Which design codes does SPEC Toolbox support?
SPEC Toolbox runs AS1720.1 for Australia and New Zealand, Eurocode 5 for Europe, NDS for the USA, and CSA O86 for Canada, so the same calculators adapt to whichever region and code you’re designing under.
How is this different to building my own spreadsheets?
Spreadsheets need to be rebuilt and re-checked every time a supplier’s product data changes. SPEC Toolbox pulls live, certified data straight from 35+ supply-chain partners, so switching suppliers or grades updates the calculation instantly instead of forcing a rebuild.
Do suppliers pay to have products listed, and does that affect which results engineers see?
Suppliers pay an annual subscription to have their certified product data available inside the calculators. Engineers still choose which supplier to design with — the platform doesn’t hide or reorder results based on subscription tier.
Can I use SPEC Toolbox output for certification or building approval submissions?
Every calculation shows its working, not just a pass/fail result, so you can check it against the code clause it’s referencing. As with any design software, the engineer of record is responsible for reviewing and certifying the final design.
What happens if my region isn't fully supported yet?
SPEC Toolbox currently covers Australia/NZ, Canada, Europe and the USA. If you’re outside these regions, you can still use the free calculators. Get in touch if you’d like to flag a code or region for us to prioritise.
