Design Binderholz Glulam to the NDS

SPEC Toolbox designs Binderholz glued laminated timber to the NDS (ANSI/AWC NDS) under the IBC and IRC, using the ANSI 117 reference design values of the AITC/PLIB Product Report P235-001 (certified to ANSI A190.1). The integration covers Norway spruce glulam in the balanced stress classes 18F-E3 and 22F-E5 and the uniform grades GL24h, GL28h and GL32h, for beams and columns, in ASD or LRFD. The grade values are taken from the integrated database.

The engineer's guide

Designing Binderholz glulam to the NDS

Binderholz manufactures glued laminated timber (glulam) from Norway spruce. In the US it is certified to ANSI A190.1 through the AITC/PLIB Product Report P235-001, with design values per ANSI 117. SPEC Toolbox designs the beams and columns to the NDS, in allowable stress design or LRFD.

Product range

The integration covers the Binderholz Norway spruce glulam, grouped by layup.

Balanced (bending) stress classes

  • 18F-E3 and 22F-E5 (European equivalents GL28c and GL32c), for bending members, with the higher-grade laminations at the extreme fibres.

Uniform grades

  • GL24h, GL28h and GL32h (US combination symbols 100, 101 and 102), for members primarily in tension or compression.

The timbers are Norway spruce in architectural or industrial appearance grades, in depths to 85 in., widths to 12 in. and lengths to 100 ft, plus custom curved beams, arches, glulam trusses and timber decking. Preservative-treated timbers are available to AITC 109 and AWPA U1.

Compatibility

At a glance, in the US scope the Binderholz glulam supports:

  • Beams and columns.
  • Allowable stress design (ASD) and LRFD.
  • Preservative-treated timbers for exposed or ground-contact conditions (AITC 109 / AWPA U1).
  • Architectural or industrial appearance grades.

What's distinctive

  • Balanced and uniform layups. Balanced bending stress classes (18F-E3 and 22F-E5) place higher-grade laminations at the extreme fibres for bending members, while the uniform grades (GL24h, GL28h and GL32h) suit members primarily in tension or compression.
  • Large sections and long members. Timbers reach 85 in. deep, 12 in. wide and 100 ft long, with custom curved beams, arches and glulam trusses produced to order.
  • Reference design values per ANSI 117. Bending design values reach 2,300 psi and the modulus of elasticity 2.0 x 10^6 psi (GL32h), adjusted per the NDS for ASD or LRFD.
  • Preservative-treated option. Timbers can be treated to AITC 109 and AWPA U1, using preservatives and retentions recognized for exposed and ground-contact service.

In the platform

The Binderholz glulam is available across the SPEC Toolbox member-design modules, worked to the NDS:

  • Timber beam and Timber column.

and in the connection modules:

  • the screw connection module and the CLT floor-to-glulam beam connection.

Member behaviour is taken from the integrated database with the ANSI 117 design values for the assigned stress class.

Design codes

Design follows the ANSI/AWC NDS under the IBC and IRC. The glulam is certified to ANSI A190.1 through the AITC/PLIB Product Report P235-001, with reference design values per ANSI 117 for the balanced stress classes (18F-E3 and 22F-E5) and the uniform grades (GL24h, GL28h and GL32h). These are adjusted by the applicable NDS factors for the chosen method to give allowable (ASD) or design (LRFD) values. Fire resistance is determined by calculation per NDS Chapter 16, and preservative treatment follows AITC 109 and AWPA U1. The timbers are produced from Norway spruce.

Why Binderholz builds on SPEC

“If we want to bring timber construction to a similar level where concrete is today, we need programs like SPEC Toolbox. Timber needs to be easy to calculate and easy to use. If every building in timber is treated as a special one off, it will never come out of the shadow and be used the way other materials are used.”

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

How current is the Binderholz glulam data in SPEC Toolbox?

It is written against the AITC/PLIB Product Report P235-001, effective March 2026, certifying the glulam to ANSI A190.1 under the IBC and IRC.

Which Binderholz glulam products are part of the integration?

Norway spruce glulam in the balanced (bending) stress classes 18F-E3 and 22F-E5, and the uniform grades GL24h, GL28h and GL32h (US combination symbols 100, 101 and 102), with custom shapes on request.

What can the glulam be used for?

Beams and columns, in allowable stress design (ASD) or LRFD, with preservative-treated timbers available for exposed conditions.
