Design KLH® – CLT to CSA O86

SPEC Toolbox designs KLH Massivholzplatten cross-laminated timber to CSA O86 under the National Building Code of Canada, using KLH's Canadian limit-states design data (rated to ANSI/APA PRG-320). The integration covers the CV1M1 spruce panels in 3-, 5-, 7- and 8-ply TL and TT layups, 60 to 320 mm thick, for load-bearing floors, roofs and walls. The panel values are taken from the integrated database.

Designing KLH® – CLT to CSA O86

KLH (KLH Massivholz GmbH, Austria) manufactures Massivholzplatten cross-laminated timber. In Canada it is designed to CSA O86, using KLH’s Canadian structural design data and rated to ANSI/APA PRG-320. SPEC Toolbox designs the panels to CSA O86, in limit states design.

Product range

The integration covers KLH Massivholzplatten CLT, crosswise-glued spruce laminations face-bonded with a formaldehyde-free polyurethane structural adhesive, in the CV1M1 grade.

  • 3-, 5-, 7- and 8-ply layups, in TL (floor and roof) and TT (wall) orientations, 60 to 320 mm thick.
  • Panels up to 3.5 m wide and 16.5 m long.
  • Non-visual, industrial-visual and domestic-visual surface qualities; PEFC and FSC certified.

Compatibility

At a glance, in the Canadian scope the KLH panels support:

  • Load-bearing floors, roofs and walls.
  • Limit states design (LSD).
  • Dry service (in-service equilibrium consistent with a 12 percent delivery moisture content).

What's distinctive

  • An extensive layup range in two orientations. 3-, 5-, 7- and 8-ply build-ups in both TL (floor/roof) and TT (wall) orientations, to 320 mm thick, each with factored moment and shear resistances and effective stiffness in the major and minor directions.
  • Large panels. Panels reach 3.5 m wide and 16.5 m long, for wide floor and roof plates and full-storey walls with fewer joints.
  • Full LSD design data. KLH publishes Canadian unfactored LSD capacities and preliminary-design span tables for floors and roofs, with deflection, vibration and fire checks to CSA O86.
  • Fire design to CSA O86 Annex B. Fire is designed by the residual-cross-section method of CSA O86 Annex B, with ASTM E119-tested assemblies to 2 hours and a Class B flame-spread classification.

In the platform

The KLH panels are available across the SPEC Toolbox CLT modules, worked to CSA O86:

  • CLT floor and CLT wall.

and in the connection modules:

  • the screw connection module and the panel-to-panel connection details (spline, butt joint and half-lap);
  • CLT floor-to-glulam beam, CLT floor-to-floor and CLT wall-to-wall connections.

Panel behaviour is taken from the integrated database with KLH’s Canadian LSD design values.

Design codes

Design follows CSA O86 (CSA O86:24, Engineering Design in Wood, limit states design) under the National Building Code of Canada. KLH’s Canadian structural design data, rated to ANSI/APA PRG-320, provides unfactored LSD capacities for the CV1M1 grade: factored moment and shear resistances, effective bending and shear stiffness, and edgewise (in-plane) shear, in the major and minor directions. Factored resistances are obtained with the CSA O86 modification factors, with the load-duration factor applied for the governing load combination and the size factor not applied; a creep factor of 2.0 is used for long-term deflection. The evaluation is for dry service; fire is designed by the residual-cross-section method of CSA O86 Annex B. Connection design is completed by the engineer using the fastener manufacturer’s data.

Why KLH Massivholz builds on SPEC

“We have established a partnership with SPEC Toolbox to foster innovation, which aligns with our core values. We strongly believe in the advantages of making mass timber calculations more accessible by enhancing engineers’ capabilities. We aim to not only facilitate the process but also continually improve the precision and quality of calculation results.”

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

How current is the KLH® – CLT data in SPEC Toolbox?

It is written against KLH’s Canadian structural design data (version 11/2025), designed to CSA O86 and rated to ANSI/APA PRG-320. Values are re-checked against the data at its next revision before the integrated data changes.

Which KLH® – CLT products are part of the integration?

KLH Massivholzplatten CLT in the CV1M1 spruce grade, in 3-, 5-, 7- and 8-ply TL (floor/roof) and TT (wall) layups, 60 to 320 mm thick, in panels up to 3.5 m wide and 16.5 m long.

What can the panels be used for?

Load-bearing floors, roofs and walls, in limit states design (LSD), in dry service (in-service equilibrium consistent with a 12 percent delivery moisture content).
