Design Schmid RAPID Screws to Eurocode 5

Structural engineers use SPEC Toolbox to design the Schmid RAPID EU screw range to Eurocode 5 (EN 1995-1-1, §8.7.2 for axially loaded screws), using characteristic values from ETA-12/0373, amended 30 March 2022. The integration covers nine RAPID families from 4 - 16 mm diameter and 30 to 1000 mm long, for connections in solid timber, glulam, CLT and LVL, and for compression, tension and shear reinforcement with the fully threaded families. The engineer's guide

Designing Schmid screws to Eurocode 5

Schmid Schrauben has manufactured timber-construction fasteners in Hainfeld, Austria since 1842. The RAPID® series is built for high-strength timber connections and is supplied across a wide length range with anti-friction coatings. The EU range integrated here is assessed under ETA-12/0373, amended 30 March 2022, issued by the Österreichisches Institut für Bautechnik under EAD 130118-01-0603.

Product range

The EU integration covers nine RAPID® families.
Partially threaded:

  • RAPID® CS, countersunk head with milling pockets or milling ribs, 4 to 12 mm, 30 to 500 mm, YellWin 500+.
  • RAPID® WH, washer head, 6 to 10 mm, 60 to 500 mm, YellWin 500+.
  • RAPID® DUAL, dual head, 8 to 12 mm, 50 to 400 mm, BlueWin.
  • RAPID® SSF, SuperSenkFix head, 6 to 10 mm, 80 to 400 mm, BlueWin 700+.
  • RAPID® Hardwood CS and Hardwood WH, countersunk and washer head, 8 mm, 80 to 440 mm and 160 mm, BlueWin 700+.

Fully threaded:

  • RAPID® FT CS, countersunk head with half-tip (HSP), 8 to 12 mm, 120 to 1000 mm, YellWin 500+.
  • RAPID® FT CL, cylinder head with full-tip or half-tip, 6 to 10 mm, 80 to 1000 mm, YellWin 500+.
  • RAPID® T-LIFT, dual head with full-tip, 12 and 16 mm, 60 to 600 mm, BlueWin.

Across the range: hardened carbon steel with YellWin 500+, BlueWin or BlueWin 700+ coatings, diameters 4 to 16 mm, lengths 30 to 1000 mm, service classes SC1 and SC2.

Compatibility

At a glance, the Schmid families support:

  • Solid timber, glulam, CLT with face and edge fixing, and LVL.
  • Timber-to-steel connections, with the countersunk, washer, dual, SuperSenkFix and hardwood heads and the RAPID® FT CS and T-LIFT screws.
  • Angled insertion.
  • Reinforcement, using the fully threaded families.
  • Hardwood and beech LVL, using the RAPID® Hardwood screws.

What's distinctive

  • The CLT narrow face is its own case. Separate spacing, end and edge distances apply to the wide and the narrow face, and the narrow face carries its own withdrawal and embedment expressions, independent of the angle to grain, plus a 0.9 factor on the withdrawal angle term.
  • Withdrawal is credited for the layers crossed. A system factor for layered timber lifts the characteristic withdrawal parameter from 1.00 for a single layer to 1.15 at six or more screwed layers in glulam and CLT.
  • A minimum-screw rule close to the grain direction. Screws of 12 mm” to “16 mm at less than 15 degrees to the grain need at least four per connection, each with threaded penetration of 20 times the diameter or more. A single screw is permitted only under axial load at 15 degrees or more, at the same penetration and with its capacity halved.
  • The hardwood family carries its own data. RAPID® Hardwood CS and WH hold withdrawal and head pull-through parameters for hardwood and for beech LVL at their own associated densities of 620 and 730 kg/m³, alongside the softwood values.

In the platform

All Schmid screws in this integration are available in:

  • the Screw module;
  • the connection detail calculators: panel-to-panel (half-lap, spline and butt joint), slab-to-wall, wall-to-wall, floor-to-wall, and beam-to-beam and beam-to-column;
  • the rib-deck calculator, for flexible connection design to Eurocode 5.

The reinforcement-marked families, RAPID® FT CS, RAPID® FT CL and RAPID® T-LIFT, additionally appear in the reinforcement connection details: beam notch, beam penetration, and beam compression perpendicular to grain. The assessment permits compression and tension reinforcement perpendicular to grain with fully threaded screws, and shear reinforcement with fully threaded screws of 8 mm or more.

Design codes

Design follows EN 1995-1-1, with axially loaded screws verified to §8.7.2. The assessment supplies its own withdrawal model in place of clause 8.7.2(4). Both the 2004 and 2025 editions of Eurocode 5 are supported. ETA-12/0373 supports CE marking. The same product data is used for design in the AUS and NZ markets in accordance with the applicable design standards there.

In their words

Why Schmid Schrauben Hainfeld builds on SPEC

“We are proud to announce that our screws are now part of SPEC Toolbox, a design tool that makes it easier than ever for engineers to calculate connections. With our deep know-how in mass timber construction, we want to share our Austrian expertise with the world, always with a clear focus on sustainability and building responsibly.”

Frequently asked questions

Design With Schmid Schrauben

How current is the Schmid data in SPEC Toolbox?

It is written against ETA-12/0373 as amended on 30 March 2022, which replaced the 23 December 2020 issue. The next amendment to that assessment sets the review point, and values are re-checked against it before the integrated data changes.

Can I use a Schmid screw with another supplier's CLT or glulam?

Yes. The screw’s characteristic values come from its own assessment, while the timber side is governed by the panel or member’s strength and density, so a Schmid screw pairs with any integrated CLT, glulam or LVL supplier. The layer system factor follows the build-up selected.

Are all Schmid screws part of the integration?

The EU integration covers the nine RAPID® families that carry engineering data in the Schmid database under ETA-12/0373. The same assessment also lists the StarDrive GPR, StarDrive and SP screw types and stainless steel variants, which are not integrated, and the RAPID® T-Con screws for wood-concrete composite slab kits are assessed separately under ETA-18/0829 and are out of scope here.
