Design with SPAX Structural Screws

SPAX manufactures structural timber construction screws for mass timber, integrated into SPEC Toolbox with each screw type mapped to its own ETA. Size, verify and specify a SPAX connection into the real CLT, glulam or steel your project uses, verified to Eurocode 5 in Europe, AS 1720.1 in Australia, and ICC-ES ESR-5358 in the US. Every value comes from SPAX's published technical assessment, not a generic catalogue number.

Why SPAX builds on SPEC

“Partnering with SPEC Toolbox was a no-brainer. Their clear focus on addressing the unique challenges of the mass timber industry positions them to overcome the critical limitations on access to education and design infrastructure.”

— Nicholas Benecke, Product Manager, SPAX International Timber Construction Solutions

About SPAX

SPAX is the timber construction brand of Altenloh, Brinck & Co (ABC), a German company founded in 1823 as the first in the country to industrially manufacture screws. Today ABC manufactures up to 50 million screws a day across facilities in Germany and the United States.

SPAX’s timber construction solutions team worked directly with SPEC Toolbox over more than a year to bring the brand’s screw range, and its full set of European Technical Assessments (ETAs), into the platform, with each screw type mapped to its specific ETA.

Frequently asked questions

Design With SPAX

Is the SPAX calculator free to use?
Yes. Every SPAX calculator on SPEC Toolbox runs free in the browser. No download, no licence, no account needed to design and verify a connection.
What standard are SPAX screws designed to?
In Europe, SPAX screws are verified to Eurocode 5 together with the product's ETA. In other regions the same products are checked to the local standard --- AS 1720.1 in Australia, ICC-ES ESR-5358 in the US.
Which SPAX products are integrated?
Screws (X-Series/XF/XC/XS/XR) are integrated for Australia, Europe and the USA. 1 product system in total. Switch region to see the set for other markets.
Can I design SPAX connections in CLT, glulam or LVL from any supplier?
Yes. The calculator lets you select the CLT, glulam or LVL you're specifying from any integrated supplier and verifies the connection against that material's real characteristic density.
Where does the capacity data come from?
Directly from each SPAX screw's published European Technical Assessment. Nothing is averaged or re-derived.
